Tony Blair

Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Heydar Aliyev was the great leader of Azerbaijan. He brought stability to his country in times of crisis. The Azerbaijani people can be proud of his heritage. During his tenure as president, relations between our countries have improved, and Azerbaijan has improved its relations with Europe. I well remember his successful visit to the UK in July 1998, especially our meeting at my residence at 10 Downing Street. We are proud that the United Kingdom is contributing to Azerbaijan’s future progress through major investments made by British companies.

It is a great honor to meet and negotiate with such a prominent statesman as Heydar Aliyev. The United Kingdom attaches special importance to closer relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan and President Heydar Aliyev. We consider Azerbaijan and President Heydar Aliyev to be our strategic allies. The work done in Azerbaijan in the field of rule of law, democratic and secular state-building over the past five years under the wise leadership of President Heydar Aliyev is carefully monitored and welcomed by the British government.

Heydar Aliyev laid the foundation for strong relations between Azerbaijan and Great Britain.

We believe that Azerbaijan plays a decisive economic and political role in the modern world. We want to work with you to develop this role. Let me congratulate you on the progress made in your country and the work you have done for it. It is a personal honor for me to welcome you here.
