Douglas Hurd

Former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom

While working in the public office, I held numerous meetings with leaders, heads of governments, and representatives of many countries in the world.

Mr. President Heydar Aliyev, here, I want to confess in front of you – among these meetings, there are some that are forever engraved in my memory and there are those that do not leave even a trace.

Mr. President, I will always remember this meeting and our conversation. I remember well that during my meeting with you, you brought to my attention your very intelligent, realistic, and at the same time very optimistic point of view about the future of your country Azerbaijan and your region.

Mr. President, you are the right person for me, I consider you as my teacher. You teach me every six months and at the moment I need that lesson. It consists of studying your attitude to the processes taking place in the Caucasus, in your region, and in the world as a whole.
